Okay, now that you know some ways to avoid stress, lets talk about ways to deal with and relieve stress for those days and moments that tend to sneak up on us!
1. Laugh! Watch a funny movie or youtube video. Play a card game with your roommates (my favorite is the Great Dalmuti!) or go out to eat with a friend you haven't seen in a while.
2. Take a bath. Or even just a shower. The heat from the water will help calm you down and can relieve any pain or sore muscles.
3. Get some sun! Sunlight helps produce serotonin, a chemical in the brain that is linked to happiness so, be sure to find creative ways to get sunlight if you can.
4. Don't turn to caffeine, energy drinks, or dare I say it....chocolate. Stay away from sweets and fatty foods that can actually make your stress worse.
5. Take a nerve tonic. A nerve tonic is a homeopathic stress relief. I take Hyland's 100% natural Nerve Tonic. It temporarily relieves the symptoms of simple nervous tension and stress. You can take it with each meal and then before bedtime (with a glass of water) but I just take it when I feel like I need it. I've found its also great for when I'm traveling. You can buy it online or in most drug stores.
6. Last but definitely not least: serve others. Whenever you feel too overwhelmed with life, classes, work, dating, etc. just forget yourself for a moment and try to brighten someone else's day. Chances are your roommates, classmates, friends and strangers alike get stressed themselves. We all tend to underestimate the power one smile can hold.
